Monty had a sociable walk yesterday with Tilly and Keisha. Having just come away from the hype of the kennel block he was initially rather agitated, barking at and focused on Tilly and Keisha (who were behind us) who were not reacting to him at all. You need to give Monty time to settle himself and sure enough after about 5 minutes he calmed right down and although still observing them was quite happy with them following and in fact was communicating calmly, not needing to get any closer but happy that they were there. Given time and confidence from the other end of the lead, Monty can and will socialise well with other dogs. Slowly and carefully building Monty's confidence and experience will help him immeasurably. It is a privilege to work with Monty and see him blossom.

Monty came out of his kennel this morning quite stressed. Unfortunately we had to pass another reactive dog on the way out which did not help matters. However we then caught up with his buddy Timmy Tim and Monty went straight up to Timmy, greeted him and relaxed and showed how happy he was to have a pal to walk with. I will let the photos show how good he was around Timmy. The, photos are in order, the first photo shows him first going up to Timmy and the last one shows how relaxed they ended up walking with each other.

As Monty and I headed out for our walk this morning we saw Roxy (walking with Jo) going out for her walk. Monty was desperate to go with Roxy so we ran to catch up and Monty was beautifully behaved with his companion the whole walk. He would have loved to get up closer but I was clear that Roxy must have her space and he respected that and settled for walking next to her. He did sneak up for a little sniff at one point but Roxy wasn't bothered.

Monty was very stressed out when I went to get him ready for a walk this morning. We headed off slowly as I wanted to give Monty the time and space to calm down. He did gradually calm down and we enjoyed ambling along together enjoying the sunshine. Half way through our walk we met fellow rescue dog Conan enjoying his walk. Monty initially did his usual growl and barking at Conan but as I allowed him to follow, and as Conan was as cool as a cucumber, Monty quickly settled with him and by the end of the walk Monty was delighted to have made another friend. With Conan by his side and given some space he also managed to pass Biggy and Marley going the other way, without any fuss.

Monty walked with his best pal, Timmy Tim today. He draws a lot of confidence from Timmy, who is so patient with him. After our walk, Monty and I headed for the paddock. Monty had a lovely run around to stretch his legs and then we had a game of fetch. Monty waits patiently while I throw the ball, then brings it back and drops it straight away near my feet. He did get confused when the ball bounced on top of the steps. Monty jumped up to the top step and looked around, expecting the ball still be there. Bless him xx

Monty followed the girls, Tilly and Keisha out on their walk today. He was excited to see them going ahead of him. No barking or growling from Monty, just enthusiasm to keep up with them. We kept a respectable distance today but I have no doubt he would have greeted politely if allowed, as his body language was friendly and very relaxed. He walked very calmly behind them, having to stop and sniff everywhere they did but then keen to catch up again. The girls headed off for a shorter walk and I fully expected Monty to try and follow them but Monty knows the longer route and he marched off on his own, clearly keen to be going for a much longer walk today. We went Monty's way as we were in no hurry to get back. Such a bright boy! Many positive experiences for Monty today including seeing 2 dogs walking past while he was in the paddock, and after acknowledging their presence, he was able to come away and focus back on our game of ball.

Monty's socialisation is coming along in leaps and bounds.(but not literally!) Monty shared a lovely, relaxed, long walk with Missie(walking with Stuart) and Roxy (walking with Hilbre) this morning. He was relaxed from the off and all 3 dogs behaved perfectly around each other. Monty had one very brief excitable, bouncy moment when Missie was having a roll and he thought he would join in, but I steered him away and he calmed again immediately. It is important that Monty stays calm around other dogs to keep all the experience positive for Monty and the other dogs and Monty is learning to control his youthful energy and enthusiam while gaining in confidence in social situations with other dogs.

Monty had a lot of excess energy this morning and bounced out of his kennel ready for adventure. We had planned to join Codi for a walk and Monty was delighted to see him and was well behaved with Codi from the off. We respectfully gave Codi his space for the first few minutes while Monty calmed himself, as I was sure Codi did not want to be bounced on by a Tigger dog, although Codi seemed to enjoy Monty's company and took it all in his stride. Codi was cool, calm and collected and seemed very relaxed with Monty so after a while we let the boys walk together if they wanted. It was interesting because Monty liked being in front and was busy investigating all sorts of smells. Codi was happy to follow but kept an eye on him and if he thought Monty had sniffed out something interesting he trotted over to have a look. Clearly Codi is a clever dog, letting Monty do all the work and only joining in if he felt it was worth the effort! 0002.gif] A lovely walk was had by all.

It's been a while since Monty and I shared a walk on our own as we have been concentrating on having social walks. I realised how much more relaxed and confident Monty is walking with a canine companion rather than on his own. He was relying heavily on me this morning to help with his confidence, a job done so much better by another dog. Despite lacking in confidence Monty coped extremely well when we had to pass an escaped horse, firstly on the road and then twice when it cantered down the bridle path past us. Good boy Monty. xx
