Fredds' Story: Surrendered into a Welsh pound had grown up with a Dogue De Bordeaux: Rescue Remedies offered a Rescue place saving his life. Fredds is neutered; chipped and fully vaccinated. Fredds was in boarding kennels in Gatwick

Summary of homing requirements: Initially Fredds was very nervous in new settings but given time and space, Fredds has really found himself, and is now a happy chappie and walking with another terrier every day. Loves companionship. Because of his nerves we would advise for Fredds not to be around children as he was nippy when handled initially until he builds trust.

PLEASE NOTE: Dog laws have changed with zero public tolerance and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers. Our Rescue asks new owners to maintain dogs on lead in public spaces and manage encounters for at least 4 months when they are sure of their dogs instincts & skills, so as not to place dog's lives at risk (Destruction or Control Orders are common place nowadays).

***PLEASE HELP OUR LONG STAY DOGS: Our min. adoption donation £175, which supports our work and Is non returnable. We will offer an alternative dog should our dog not settle given adequate time and reassurance. Rescue Remedies offers their dogs back up for life and exist on the goodwill of our supporters and volunteers.

Please click for Fredds' thread for regular updates, new pictures and videos. To apply to home a dog, you must be ready within 7 days and complete a homing questionnaire submitted Online We work fast to secure our dogs their loving homes and can be talking to up to 10 families at any one time. Please remain open: We have the dogs we have. Our dogs need a supportive family to offer patience, time and tolerance to allow them to settle.

I picked up Fredds from his transport van bringing him from Wales. He was very quiet, but quickly had his tail wagging furiously when hw saw the little pieces of sausage and chicken I had put in his crate in the car. Throughout the journey home I plied him with yet more sausage an chicken and by the time we reached New Romney we were firm friends. Sylvie held him while I put on his collar and harness and then he went for a long walk.

Like any JRT he was interested in everything and obviously enjoyed walking round the lanes.

When he arrived home there was a bowl of more chicken and sausage on his bedroom floor which he eat with gusto....not too much today and another small meal before he goes to bed.

Sylvie has sat with him for a while and he very quickly learned how to jump on the bed and snuggle up....I'm going to have my time with him right now.

First impressions are very positive.

Fredds slept with me last night and, after taking in all the new smells in the annex, he settled down beside me and went through the entire night without moving a muscle. he had a brief visit to the garden just after 5 o'clock and then returned to his own bedroom while the remainder of the residents were fed and spent some time of their own in the garden. He was fed about 7 o'clock and ate his chicken and sausages and a little biscuit with considerable relish.

This morning, we decided that Sylvie would walk Fredds with Karen, who used to foster and walk for RR when she lived in London, taking Jackson. It was a great success with Fredds imitating Jackson in every way from smelling the same bush to "doing his stuff" in precisely the same place!!!! As a result Fredds and Jackson will walk together for the time being.

He is a little nervous when meeting new people, indeed he is still a trifle unsure of me, but he quickly overcomes his nerves and will come and sit close to you, although not keen to be too forward yet.

His coat is quite unusual....the black areas are smooth with the white patches being long and wiry.

Karen has taken photos of Fredds today and will be posting them later....some are of Fredds by himself but others include Jackson to show how well he appears to get on with other dogs.

Fredds is an absolute little sweetheart - and very handsome too! He has a lovely coat which looks as though the black bits are smooth patterdale and the white bits are rough-coat JRT - or something like that! :D

I think John is right - walking with another confident dog gave Fredds confidence too. He really enjoyed having a sniff and was very curious about everything he came across. He loves his treats (which will be great for training)! He was fine with me giving him a stroke and a cuddle while we were on the walk, but he would look around to Sylvie for reassurance now and then.

He did attempt to play with Jackson a few times (Jackson wasn't up for it unfortunately) - given this was his first day of settling in, he's done really well - a happy perky little chap love4.gif

I did take some pics on my phone which I thought were fine until I got home and got my glasses on!! They're a little blurry, but myself and Steph will get some good pics with the camera over the next couple of days.

I was met with a very waggy tail from Fredds this morning, who couldn't wait for his walk! I introduced him to Steph (she will walk him tomorrow) and he immediately responded happily to a little conversation and a back scratch. After taking a couple of pics, I picked up Jackson and we said goodbye to Steph and went on our way.

We started over the fields which he loved - he has lots of energy and I suspect he would have been very happy to keep going more than our hour! He had a curious sniff at the horses but didn't really respond to them. Then we walked down a quiet lane and to the park - there were a couple of large dogs being walked - Fredds sniffed from a short distance but was very laid back (wasn't over-excited or anxious). Nearly every passer-by commented on him or wanted to say hello to him - he is very very cute! - again, he was pretty laid-back and waggy-tailed with each greeting (but I didn't let anyone touch him at this stage.) He's also fine with traffic - didn't bat an eye, except for a large lorry passing us he hid behind my legs. He's fine with cyclists too. In fact, I would say he seems generally very well socialised - and also is still taking his lead from Jackson who is a confident boy. He's very easy to walk.

He's a little nervous being handled, and more so once back inside - he was happy for a stroke on the head on our walk but would duck his head away from my hand when we got back home.

A lovely boy who'll really enjoy settling in with a new family. John can tell you more about that though :D

Fredds seems to be settling in well with John and Sylvie - he particularly likes to follow Sylvie (he's become her little shadow!) from room to room as she goes about the day-to-day. He's also very affectionate with her and likes to cuddle up.
He can get a little overcited/agitated before a walk (he loves his walks!) - I'm sure this will improve with a bit of gentle work from us all - this manifests when being handled (doesn't like harness being put on or taken off); he's been a bit full-on with Jackson his walking partner at the start of the walk (who's become a little wary of him) and he can also be mouthy with hands and fingers (in a puppy-way), but seems to respond well with firm but gentle instruction. The fact that he loves food so much is also great for rewarding his good behaviour (ie he's happy to let us take his harness off when he can see a bit of tripe stick at the end of it! :D ) Because of this, I'd recommend older children (no small fidgety hands!!)

On the walks he's very energetic and an active sniffer, curious of everything, and enjoys street-walks just as much as fields and lanes. He is unsure of dogs he doesn't know, though responds much better to small dogs. He reacted to a bouncy-GSD we met on a walk a couple of days ago (which wasn't surprising), so we thought we'd see how he was with my dog Finn (a calm, largeish collie x and is very comfortable around other dogs). I walked ahead with Finn while Steph walked behind with Fredds - he seemed interested to catch up, but instead of having a sniff he promptly nipped Finn on the knickers! Having said that, he's met a couple of small dogs who he invites to play, so I think some consistent socialising will help him too.
He is adorable love4.gif

Well, Fredds is a different dog to the one we took in a couple of weeks ago. Whenever you go into his room he jumps up onto one of the two beds in his room with his tail upright and wagging furiously....he's ready for his walk, but only after he's had his harness put on. No trouble there, now....it used to be a case of dicing with the occasional nip, but that's history.

He adores his walks with Jackson and, on his return, he loves to snuggle up and have cuddle time with either Sylvie or me.

I think this underlines how important it is for fosterers and adopters alike to give their charges time to settle and to work with them slowly without dictating the speed at which changes in behaviour should occur....and this can be a long time....Fredds has progressed remarkably quickly.

Fredds is one great little guy, full of character and mischief....he'll make an ideal companion but, probably, not for children.

Fredds and Chloe were introduced to each other today and it went really well with both of them sniffing each other with wagging tails. Fredds wanted to play, but Chloe was not so keen as she had brought her ball with her and wanted to play chase. We took her ball away so she could focus more on Fredds' attention but she was as keen to go into her room as she was to run around the garden.

Fredds has developed into a lovely little JRT. He jumps onto one of the beds in his room and waits patiently for his harness to be put on. He is keen to get going and walks really well with Jackson.

Steph., one of his walkers, has taken a super photo of him which, I hope, will be put on his thread later today.

Fredds came visiting today with John and little Chloe, to meet Marmite and also relative new boy Sheldon. All the dogs had a field day and had a lovely play in the garden.
Fredds was very taken with Sheldon as a playmate, they charged around together 0028.gif :dog_running-186.gif:
