'The Staffie Song'

It seems everyone said the more the merrier
When they bred the Staffordshire Bull Terrier
From coast to coast from town to town
On every street we get around

Soon we became quite a trend
Yob dogs made to defend
To show how 'vicious' we can be
Well that's a joke just look at me!

Now I'm here in a cage called death row
I got no hope, nowhere to go
And nobody wants our kind
We're just playing for time

We're the Staffies the unwanted puppies
To be born a Staff is unlucky
The most unwanted dog in Britain
But we can be sweet as a kitten

C'mon people can't you see
You're not helping by breeding me
You're making a rod for our backs
It's not much fun to be a Staff

Oh the problem is out of hand
We're being put down every day man
Old ones, young ones, pups
Some don't get to grow up

When you see an advert in the paper
'Staffies for Sale' - turn it over
Don't even look, don't be tempted
Until every shelter is emptied

Cos if you buy one of us will die
Then how can you look us in the eye
We're friendly, we just wanna play
So rescue a Staffie today!

We're the Staffies the unwanted puppies
To be born a Staff is unlucky
The most unwanted dog in Britain
But we can be sweet as a kitten

Breedism on the afflicted

Born into eager hands for cash or favour
Puppy love's novelty rapidly starts to waiver
Terrier ways being misread & misunderstood
Prepare sweet one, not long for this neighbourhood

Energy contained in cages & behind kitchen doors
Gutless owners shun responsibility - not mine but yours
Our emotional friend is rejected and pushed away
Guilt ridden family scheme to get rid of today

Abandoned & shunned, a breed no one wants
Famed as nanny dog yet in ignorance everyone taunts
Most know a homeless Staffie's life is threatened indeed
Worthless now, in such trouble and in much need

Rescue Remedies stoops down to lift high and cuddle
We’ll skill you, praise and free you from this muddle
Celebrity status, your love irrepressible and real
Beauty in body & soul which photos so reveal

Face washes for free and heart bursts in employ
Smile muscles enormous with eyes shining sheer joy
Companionship and inclusion, safe & forever YOURS
Ambassador of love sleeps beside me and snores

Lovely words.

I wrote this poem a few years ago, when I first became aware of the plight of Staffies in this country.

I hope it is ok to post here and not too sad:

What’s my name?

I heard myself called a new name today
It was ‘male’ and ‘un-neutered’ and ended in ‘stray’
I did try to tell them, ‘cos they clearly don’t know
That my real name’s not these ones
My real name is Beau

I’m also called ‘precious’ and ‘good boy’ an’ all
And ‘cheeky’ and ‘sweetheart’ and ‘go fetch your ball!’
So I’ll choose not to answer, keep my face turned away
‘Til my own humans find me, which must be today.

We dogs know much more than we possibly tell
We know ‘walkies’ and ‘vet’ and ‘wee wee’ as well
But today I’ve heard ‘PTS’ that’s a new one on me
And what it all means, well I’ll just wait and see.

I’ll stay curled up here; now called ‘shivering in fright’
And wait for my humans, through long freezing nights
I hear that tomorrow, I’ll be called ‘PTS’
I don’t think that is me, but it could be - I guess.

I know that for sure, I’d prefer to be Beau
I could sit, stay and give paw, and put on a show
But today I’m now ‘Staffie’ and ‘brindle’ again
Then ‘another’, a ‘pity’ and ‘at least there’s no pain’.

So now I’m a new name, that’s hard to recall,
A number; Not breathing
I’m no dog at all.
