Is it right

Post by sweetpea » Thu Nov 01, 2018 12:17 pm

Is it right that a rescue can ask for a much higher donation 4x more..... for a certain breed /puppys and dogs .....

I have come across a rescue that asks different prices for different breeds and wether or not its a pup ...ranging from £180 usual donation up to £800 ....is this ethical. ...

My friend has made a complaint to the charity commission as she applied to adopt a dog from same rescue and was told the donation was alot higher than previously told ..

Absolutely it is! People pay up to 4 grand for a pug puppy from a breeder, it is entirely right for rescues to ask for more if they have the same on their books. It's still considerably cheaper but with the benefit of support from the rescues rehoming team and the good feeling you're helping the charity continue to save and maintain the less desirable/fashionable dogs (the dogs I prefer).

There is a problem in the UK where kennels that have contracts with councils rehome direct to the public without neutering or home-checking, usually for between £50 to £60. Many of these dogs end up with pet peddlars (and many are then sold on to back street breeders). These peddlars have groups of people on low income that they pay to get the dogs on their behalf. A rescue selling perceived high-value breeds, even neutered, would be inundated with peddlars and their cronies if there was a healthy profit to be made, so from that view point I can understand why they would add a premium to the price.
Having said that, I'd be suspicious of any that regularly has high-value breeds and pups.
