It's been a lovely day down here and Sylvie has been preparing the vegetable patch....helped and hindered by the dear girl, Bertha. Bertha just loves being out in the garden, wagging her tail and doing her very best to chase after anything which moves. She really does struggle with her balance and her back legs tend to let her down quite regularly but, I'm pleased to say that her coughing and spluttering seem to be improving by the day....there are some days when she rarely has a problem, but others when she tries to bring up the mucus on her lungs with little success. Occasionally she catches sight of Shadow and Precious in the annex and tries to see them off before going back to mooching around and spending yet more time in the sun. We only allow her about twenty minutes each time she goes out, whether it be in the garden or for a walk down to the park at the end of the road....she finds that's enough at the moment.

She eats like a horse, but has four small meals a day and is putting on weight slowly.

She goes to see Mark again next Tuesday when I hope he will be more pleased with her progress....I'll let you know!

How wonderful. I can just picture Bertha wandering around the garden, in the sunshine 'helping' with the gardening. Completely fell in love with this girl when she charmed Ringo.

Thank you, SarahW, for posting these photos. You can see that Bertha is very good at pruning everything!!!

My feeling is that Bertha is still not making the progress I would have expected, but Mark will be able to assess her tomorrow, and I'll let you know....she certainly enjoys her time in the garden and seems better there, but the wind has been quite keen today and she really mustn't spend too much time out when it is cold. Physically she seems much stronger and she eats very well, but she has major problems with her rear legs and balance....there's a long way to go before we can say she is available for adoption....but, when she is fit, she will be a great companion.

Mark saw Bertha earlier this afternoon and confirmed the comments in both of my previous posts....the medication she has been on has not improved her condition and she still continues to produce excessive amount of mucus which she is not bringing up. He is now treating her in a totally different way with Doxycycline which is used, in humans, to combat TB, and also a steroid. If there is still no progress within a week he proposes to sedate her and make further investigations.

On a more positive note, Bertha is a truly happy dog with a waggy tail and really enjoys her time in the garden or having a cuddle on the settee in the annex. We do love her and so would anybody who has the good fortune to meet up with her....our walkers go in to see her every day....they are smitten!!

There's been an improvement in Bertha's condition today....whether it is the new medical regime or the short walks along the seafront in the glorious sunshine today I just don't know, but it is good news. Let's all hope that her body is beginning to react to everything in a positive way and that she is, at last, making progress. Keep at it, Girlie!

Bertha has been having two walks of about twenty minutes a day with Sylvie, along the sea front and across the fields: she loves them and her tail rotates like a helicopter blade. Yesterday she started her "official" walking routine with an additional half hour walk with one of the dog walkers....I'm hoping that these brief walks will have the effect of shifting the mucus from her lungs which she continues to produce in large amounts. Mark. the vet, has also changed her medication again and this, combined with her increased exercise appears already to be improving her condition.

She is such a happy and affectionate soul and, when you consider how she came into "rescue" and whether she would even survive her first week or so, it is quite amazing the progress she has made to date....soon she'll be ready for rehoming, so get those questionnaires in quickly.

I visited Bertha the other day at John's and what a pleasant surprise to see how well she is doing in foster. She is so friendly and affectionate, greeting you as soon as she sees you. She loved all the fuss from me and my dad. Such a huge improvement from when I last saw her in kennels. She is coughing but it does not seem to distress her in the slightest. We went for walk and she was striding along, Sylvie and my dad were getting left behind!!! I was utterly amazed how much she has changed, she has bright eyes, a glossy coat and a lovely happy personality.

Bertha would make a great companion for someone and would make them feel like the centre of the universe. Absolutely adorable! love4.gif love4.gif

Gosh!! Was Bertha pleased to see you and your dad when you came down this Wednesday....she didn't know who to welcome first, so had to spend time rushing between the two of you, jumping up onto the settee where you were trying to get at the treats in your handbag, and then haring off to your father rubbing against his legs and licking him to death as he stroked her. She is such a friendly girl and seems to cough, now, only when she is excited. As you can see from the video, she has an unusual gait, but that certainly doesn't affect her and, on her walks, she motors along "like a steam train".

I think she will soon be fit enough to be spayed and then ready for adoption. She is a lovely and affectionate lady, and will be a great companion to anyone who has the good fortune to adopt her.
