Our Lovely Lady Luna “How much do we love you? To the moon, and beyond, dearest Luna, and back again.”

We said goodbye to our Lady, "Lady Luna", Luna Staffie of Old Coulsdon, on Monday (06/04/2020). We are trying not to be sad.

In October 2017 Luna was diagnosed with a "massive" inoperable tumour. We were advised that she only had a few more months. We have all been blessed to have with nearly 2.5 years more together. She has, in the main, been seemingly, entirely unaware of her "condition", seemingly had no pain and though her girth more than doubled, the ever expanding tumour seemed to "get along" with the rest of her body without conflict. We have all been very very lucky.

The last few days had been bad. PTS was the only help and kindness we could now provide to her.

There will be dark times for us without her, sad moments when her presence, the lack of it, hits us unexpectedly and powerfully, but she will forever, every day be a happy and pleasurable presence in our lives and memories. We already miss your irritating quirks :)

We love her dearly, we always will. She will always be our first four legged family member but we will, very soon we hope be joined by a couple of "rescued" four legged family members, hopefully from the wonderful RR. Rescuing these wonderful dogs is so important. Their quality of life enriches ours beyond measure and recognition. And when the next fur babies join our family, we will cherish them all the more, take all the more pleasure from their presence in our lives because we know how much we loved Luna, how important she was and is to us.

Take care, be safe, be well and be happy. Keep safe and well the gorgeous furry friends in your lives. Please support in any way you can the wonderful RR. We are so honoured to be part of the RR family community. We wish you the most wonderful Easter.

We will add a slightly longer post to her timeline below shortly and hopefully add some photos too of fond memories when we can

Thank you Rescue Remedies for all that you do and our warmest regards to the entire Rescue Remedies family, four legged and fewer. Heather, Brian and the magnificent lovely Lady Luna, Staffie of Old Coulsdon

Homing Requirements: Luna needs a stable family home as an only dog but may settle with dog friendly cat(s). Luna can be left without event for short periods. Luna would appreciate a close family home with secure garden and exit management, to avoid inadvertently getting through gates and doors, though she is not an 'escaper'. Not for boisterous children but dog savvy children yes. Luna needs out from kennel life!

Her Story: Luna found herself in a Northern pound unclaimed and we came forwards to save her. She is shy by nature. Luna is neutered, chipped and vax'd. Luna is currently in foster in Croydon Area.

Advert: To meet Luna swells the heart. She has a sadness in kennels which is beginning to lift as she meets many friends. She is non plus ref dogs as she passes down the kennel corridor and meets on her walks, but probably wouldn't want an off lead dog bouncing in to her face. She seems quite self contained and could be left for short periods. She travels in the car as a passenger. Was muzzled in the vets and she became immediately subservient. Gently loving, not over affectionate, a "snuggler

Luna is around 6-7 years old, a Staffie X with a calm air. She came already spayed but our vet made a better job of it. She isn't a bouncy dog, she will shy away from strangers who are intrusive but soon comes around. Luna is shy and appreciates a gentle approach. Luna is going to be cherished by her new family...just a question of finding them!

Original Referral Details: Sat 19th Oct: LUNA - A lovely but shy at first, Brindle and White female Staffy/Bulldog type cross breed. She is quite overweight at the moment and will need a good diet and exercise to get her back to a healthy weight. She has been no trouble in kennels, she is coming around with people and her tail is wagging more and more each day. She knows some basic commands and tries to stay clean inside. She is adult at approx 6-7years old, medium in size (but chunky) On the put to sleep list Tuesday 22nd Oct and they will! xx brenda

Luna came to stay with us for a couple of days and I have to say she was an absolute delight love4 To start with she loved the car, quite happy to nod off to sleep whilst I was driving and waited patiently whilst I messed around with leads etc before she could get out. Once arriving at home I was unsure what the reaction would be between Luna and Badger the cat. I must admit I was quietly impressed.......... Luna was very 'keen' on Badger but he wasn't fazed by her at all, to the point that by the evening he was laying on a chair with her giving him a rather exuberant face wash !! However it has to be said, Badger is dog friendly as he grew up with our old dearly loved rescue staff x.
The inner puppy in Luna displayed itself once she was running after the ball in the garden, which she loved to retrieve and drop at your feet! She is great at basic commands such as sit, lie down and is clean in the house to the point that once outside she went to wee wee on command Woo Very easy to walk, always checks you are okay. It's like being with a dear old friend.Luna was completely relaxed around the house (apart from when Badger appeared), enjoying a chill out on the sofa and in the morning a good roll around on the bed!
I must admit we have fallen in love with this girl and already miss her terribly

Day 1 of Luna at Old Coulsdon. We have the honour and the absolute pleasure to bring Luna home for a few days. Well that was the original plan. Santa

Whilst we have no intention of calling her anything but Luna, "Lady" is the title that absolutely describes her. It's very much like there has been a Luna shaped hole in our lives and of course she fits the niche perfectly.

We popped down to Godstone kennels on Friday to collect her but first we walked a few other lovely rescue dogs. We took Luna for a walk with Simon in tow. Then in to the car with her. Brian went to sign out and she looked for him, once he was back in the car she lay down on the back seat, head hanging over the edge and rested. She popped her head up a couple of times when we had to stop at lights or a junction. But strangely only really raised herself up as we turned off the main road to take the last few roads to home.

Took her for a little walk along the road before taking her in to the house, then in we went. Off with leads and harness and we just let her wander around. She mostly followed us around initially, clicking around on the laminate flooring.

We opened up some toys that we had bought for her and gave her a knotted rope log type thing, which she proudly carried around, occasionally asking us to play tug with her. Xmas Wink

Then we fed her. She wasn't much interested in the water, she doesn't seem to drink much so far, the water is always down for her just in case. Went through the food well. Then came back to us. We were on the sofa with laptops, and into the middle she put herself and she fit perfectly. Of course I lost all interest in the laptop and spent the rest of the time stroking her, which she seemed to like as she settled towards me more and more Smile. Who needs a week in Tenerife to find relaxation, this is bliss.

Come our meal time, we ate at a table in the sitting room, initially she seemed like she might beg but she lost interest almost instantaneously when perhaps from our behaviour table feeding was going to happen. She lay down on one of her beds and rested until we were done. Come the end of the meal we retired to relax on the sofa and again she joined us. Bliss.

Bedtime, I went to bed early as this week has been quite "challenging" (we spend Christmas with family in Cowden who had powercuts Christmas Eve & Christmas Day). She joined me, lying on top of the bed and slept.

We were disturbed during the night by a couple of foxes playing tag just outside the back of the house! and whilst she was interested, went to explore, there was no barking, no frantic energy to get at them. She was perfect. She barks very very little. Back to bed and this time she slept on her bed by our bed. And all was quiet and sleepy until the next morning. What a dream dog.

Lady Luna Update. Her personality is emerging, blossoming. She remains of course Lady Luna, gentle, sweet, loving, snugly, gorgeous. But she is developing an ever faster pace on walks and was even jogging today it was lovely.

I can't explain quite how, but her face has changed, she looks more Staffie now than than she did in the original photo shoot, I think.

We bought her a Christmas reindeer toy, something soft for her. She decimated it in about 30 minutes. We retrieved all the stuffing and other innards but she has now taken to playing with the "skin" and pulling it around like a lion shifting a dead gazelle (gross image but sorry it's what comes to mind). She enjoyed herself immensely.

She also played with a large rainbow snake (soft toy). I like the snake and didn't really want it disemboweled so I asked her to release it and it rests peacefully, without molestation on the back of the sofa where she frequently reclines.

Despite the rotten weather she exits the house for walks in the rain without hesitation. She is very good with being dried off and even took the hairdryer well, though I was obviously careful with it and her.

Not sure I have mentioned it, I used the torch inside the house the other evening, looking for something and unknowingly swept the beam around, she suddenly started chasing around the room, chasing the beam where it landed. She is also attentive to sunlight reflections Smile.

She seems to be shedding years Smile.

I can't believe we only picked her up for a temp foster last Friday. Our lives, our home, our world has become .. well words don't suffice. We are so so honoured to have her in our lives and we will treasure her for ever.

Happy Christmas to you, your families and the ever growing and most magnificent Rescue Remedies Family, four legged and two, with love and warmed regards from Heather Brian and Lady Luna from Old Coulsdon

As per our post of December 27th, this is the date in 2013 that we brought Luna to our home, for a few days break from cold winter kennels. But as our posting from the early days set out, we fell in love with her instantly. It was then just a matter of being sure that she would be happy with our lifestyle, with us, with the furry friends that inhabit our garden (foxes, badgers and deer) plus our hours of being in and out. And she was magnificent. December 31st we sent an email to Lynne asking, please could she stay with us and the rest has been a dream come true.

This year, the last few months have been tough. We thought we saw a lump below her ribs when she was on her back stretched out, so we took her to the vet. They agreed to have a look and after scanning and x-raying and cutting her open they confirmed that she had a massive tumour that had engulfed her spleen and one kidney, it had attached itself to the wall of her body and was displacing other organs. The options, put her to sleep whilst she was still with them, investigate whether a specialist would be prepared to try to cut out the tumour, which if successful would mean she was in significant pain post op, would need reconstructive surgery to rebuild parts of her body, muscles etc that would have to be cut out all to possibly extend her life my six months. The final option, she could come home with us and we would look after her until the tumour compromised her system or it burst. We brought her home. She had showed no signs of being unwell, she was her usual gorgeous, happy wonderful Luna.

Happy to report that Luna is still with us. She is now on steroids and they have really helped manage her tumour. At the moment she and the tumour are getting along well with no arguments. Her belly would beat Santa by miles and to look at her can be difficult, she can be so extended sometimes. The vets initially described the tumour as the size of a football or a human head, now its watermelon size and always growing. But she still wraps herself up tight to sleep and snuggle and fit on the bed! She’s happy, healthy (if you ignore the tumour), lively and as wonderful as usual. She visited the vets recently and they were all very very pleased to see how great she is, how well she looks, how happy she is. She has actually lost weight, despite her increased focus on food. The vet said that as long as you ignore her belly she looks and seems fantastic.

In one of early post op visits the vets said her life expectancy was months, and the way they said it, it wasn’t going to be many months. We weren’t expecting her to really be with us for Christmas. But we are overjoyed that she is and she is still out gorgeous girl, granted with some Steroid characteristics now present.

We had always wished for more than one dog, but Luna wasn’t keen on other dogs and so she has been our one and only and we have had to be respectful of dog encounters. Over time she has mellowed a little, less unhappy and more calm. However, Christmas Day, we were walking Luna and we had a fantastic, Santa surprise when Luna was passing a house and unexpectedly met a dog face to face. The dog was low energy and calm, they met nose to nose and Luna was sniffed. The other dog was off lead and the owner wasn’t fussed, seemingly reading the meeting with no concerns. And wonder of wonders Luna was perfectly polite. A bit surprised and uncertain as to what she was supposed to do. On reflection we could perhaps have let her explore the encounter further but we were surprised too. Luna seemed to want to follow the dog and indeed didn’t continue the walk in the direction she had been going, turning around to travel in the same direction as the other dog. Flabbergasted is the best word. It would have been so nice to have had a companion (four legged) for Luna over the years, but it was not to be, but this encounter was literally a dream come true.

This time of year is very special to us for many reasons, the fact that Luna came into our Lives at this time and still with us just makes it all the more magical.

We will be posting some pics of certain moments of our lives with Luna over the next days or so

For now we wish everyone in the Rescue Remedies family the most wonderful Christmas, New Year and a brilliant 2018.

With all our love

Heather Brian and Lovely Lady Luna
