We will offer an alternative dog should our dog not settle given adequate time and reassurance. He's calmed down a lot since we got him home. Met a beagle on a short walk. Said Beagle bayed at him from across the road. As we crossed the road, Alfie didn't bat an eyelid - he was too interested in getting to know his new neighbourhood.
He's had a meal, explored the garden, had a 20 minute walk, had a nap, helped put dumplings into the stew. Here he is watching the street.

Re: Alfie JRT DofB 2013 Hitchen Herts
A wonderful first night, last night. Alfie started to wind down and want to sleep at about 9pm.
After a patrol of the garden boundaries, which were meticulously marked, he settled into Ron's old 'oyster' bed (a fleece bed with a removable hood.) He approves very much of the hood.
He was fast asleep by 10pm. We both woke at 8am as my teasmaid announced that tea was ready. Alfie then escorted me downstairs, asked to go out, did a huge pee, then raced back upstairs to his bed, where he is dozing as I finish the last cup of morning tea.
Alfie is permanently hungry, and is drinking a lot. He also seems to have a problem with his anal glands, which are swollen and leaking. He is licking them and looking uncomfprtable. While Ronnie would let me empty them, our first terrier (Ash, a working terrier), wouldn't. There may be need for an earlier-than-planned to our wonderful vet (Stuart has the magic touch).

Alf slept through the night, from 10pm to 8am. While my teasmaid brewed the morning cuppa, he escorted me downstairs and asked to go out. One huge pee later, he raced back up to bed where he dozed while I finished breakfast.
He's had a tiring day, learning to stay (5 mins behind a closed door while I let the cleaner in and spoke to her), and to fetch the ball and drop it rather than run off and chew it. After our morning walk, MWNN and I took him to be fitted with a new harness - Ron's is too big for him.
Alf thrives on interaction. He won't play in the garden, which is fine, as there are lots of nooks, crannies, and bushes to explore - not to mention the wood store.
He was in discomfort with his glands yesterday, so I took him to meet the vetinary nurse this afternoon. She said both glands were in bad way. With the aid of a second nurse, and much encouragment and soothing, Alf's glands were emptied. He cried a little but was rewarded with a treat, for which he sat very patiently. We'll wait a couple of weeks to have his nails clipped, and a few more before we have his teeth cleaned.
I've just had a bath. Alf believes that water is only for drinking. He's having a nap while I have a post-bath rest.
