Meera Staffie DOB 06.14 Bristol, South Glos
Posted: Sun 06 Sep 2015 16:23
Current Status: Homed
Meera needs a supportive family to offer time and tolerance to allow their new dog to settle. NB Our Rescue asks owners to maintain dogs on lead in public spaces and manage encounters, as dog law changes place dog's lives at greater risk.
Known background: Meera was handed in to a council pound. We stepped forwards to offer a Rescue place and save Meera's life. Meera is neutered, chipped & vaccinated. Meera was fostered several weekends. Briefly homed but return due to her lack of confidence around dogs. She was in Guildford Kenns enjoying regular weekend foster.
Sweet girl who has had to find herself within Rescue. Meera is settling with us & her confidence has grown. She does settle being left given a gradual programme but naturally will do better with a companionship home. Her confidence comes from her handlers & our walkers are welcoming her excess tender love. Original Referral: 01.09.15 Hi Lynne, I currently need a bit of help with a Staffie bitch. She is a lovely girl and I have explained everything below in detail;
We have a female 14 month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier in at the moment. She is lemon and white. As you can see from her photos, she is absolutely beautiful.
She has received an assessment from myself and my colleague and has been deemed good natured. She came to us last week. She was signed over to us by the owner. She was signed over due to the owner not being able to handle her anymore. She did receive a bite off of Meera during a dog squabble. After assessing the situation and getting all the facts, this WAS an ACCIDENT and not intentional. They have had Meera since a pup and they got her off of Facebook. They described her as hyper active.
Meera was being fed on food from Poundland called Weebox. On studying the content, this is a high protein food lacking in any nutritional value. This much I had gained already from the fact it came from poundland. Meera was living with an older 6 year old Staffie. Neither of them were being walked which was obvious from the condition of the 6 year old Taz. The dogs weren’t separated for feeding, they were fed a little bit apart. Meera was anticipating being fed on the day of the incident. The owner had gone to the food cupboard and Meera had jumped up at the side. Taz came along and Meera gave a grumble to tell her to go away, which she did. After the food was put down, Meera scoffed hers down and Taz had some left. Meera then went for Taz's food and gave her a warning nip on the neck. This worried the owner and she put her hand in between the dogs to separate them which in turn caused her to be bitten. I checked Taz's neck and there was no puncture wound what so ever. The owner did have to receive dissolvable stitches for a small bite on her hand. I had a look at Taz and noticed that her Vulva was swollen. I asked about this and it turned out, both the dogs were in season, which would have heightened the situation.
On hearing about this, it was evident that the bite was non-intentional and purely because the owner put her hands in the way. I asked for some more history as they had Meera for all her life. She is good around children just hyperactive which can be solved with training and correct diet. She was normally good around Taz. It appeared to myself and my colleague that Meera is a lovely girl and she would make a good pet but she hasn’t received ANY training at all or a proper diet of any nutritional value.
She has been with us for a week now and the kennels have said she is a lovely girl with a tiny bit of separation anxiety which is understandable. She is an escape artist when left in the paddock. They have a 8ft fence that she tries to climb but when a member of staff is with her she’s fine and playful. Mx Dog warden We have asked for time as we can't spay Meera yet and have many other emergencies. Meera comes around 18th Sept
