Mr Deez has become thoroughly accustomed to his new home in Wiltshire. He knows the town well and has a number of preferred walks - and shops. Those would be the ones where they give him treats. When we get near them he increases his walking speed and charges in through the door, before sticking his paws on the counter and grinning at the staff. Needless to say, he has ideas about which direction he wants to go whenever we go anywhere near the town centre. He has plenty of admirers, too: mainly old ladies and little girls.

He still has plenty of energy, particularly when he goes haring up and down the lawn when he's in the garden.

But he is now offering courses on having a nice, big rest.

We were thinking of getting him a big straw hat and some sunglasses - maybe a sun-lounger too....

Today is Diesel’s birthday – or rather, adoption day. It’s now four years since he came to live with us and in that time, he has become quite the well-travelled dog. He now lives in Somerset, having previously had residences in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. That’s quite a shift westward for the boy from Norfolk. He’s very popular here, particularly in one shop, where they like him to visit to cheer them up – and he likes to go in because they give him biscuits. He appears quite put out on Sundays when he tries to push the door and finds it locked. He is also becoming much more friendly with other dogs. When we first got him, there was one dog he had a bit of a thing for and one whom he’d pass without giving her the time of day, but generally speaking, he wasn’t keen on other dogs. These days, he is really quite good with other dogs and has numerous friends round here (mainly girls – though he has also been pals with a very large English bull terrier called Dexter) and he does nothing, apart from look a little pained and embarrassed, when little terriers yap at him.

For a dog who wasn’t known for caring much for food when we were in kennels, it now seems to be among his top three priorities, along with sleep and cuddles (ideally any combination of the two).

He still has time for playing his own, inimitable games, though. The rules seem to be that nobody is allowed to play except him and at the end of the game, something has to have been broken (ideally a squeaker removed from something, but failing that, a liberal amount of stuffing). What with it being his birthday, he had a new toy – or two, in fact, today – and we managed to get some pictures of him playing with them.

On this day, five years ago, Diesel came to live with us so today was a day for celebration! After his favourite walk, he had a new toy to play with/destroy (though for now, it remains in one piece, having enjoyed a reprieve when Deez decided it was time to leave off for a quick snooze) and this evening, he had a special tea of sausages (from the butcher’s shop, no less) and mash. He has things all worked out these days and knows what he likes: food, cuddles, walks and sleeps …
