Homing Requirements: Saffy came to us in a near death state. She is fully recovered but her hip joints were affected so she is on painkillers and needs restricted exercise one 15 min. walk a day, shouldn't do stairs and kept 'light weight' (is currently on a diet). Saffy can be wary of children so needs an adult home. She hates closed crates. Most comfortable as a only pet. She is excited by cats and squirrels so needs a secure garden ideally 6' fencing. Ideally her family would only use kennels in an emergency.

Her Story: Found stray in starved state: chipped: owner passed her on a year, have her vet details (history) age and name. to being found stray. Had lived with another Staffie. Saffy now in foster in Hampton.

Advert: Saffy is a truly special lovely character. She cares for you; understands and converses. She doesn't like mornings; rain or snow and needs persuasion to go in the garden on such days but holds; very good housetraining. Saffy uses either an open crate or dog bed; sofa or armchair to relax on. Saffy gets wary behind a grid as though she has been taunted in the past. She snuffles but not barky! She understands houserules. We are looking for an inclusive family situation where she is spoilt in all the best ways. She also is excited with cats or squirrels. She LOVES footballs.

Saffy has a velvety orange brindle fur with a beautiful head and is 7 yrs old. Saffy loves people and can accept dogs in her territory once introduced outside on neutral territory. She is keen of food! She is very gentle in taking treats. She loves company but can be left does the bends on your return! She loves play, expressing fun and love. Saffy is a rescue favourite so only special families need apply!

Saffy's thread is below: see her progress from rags to riches
Referral Letter: Hi Lynne, Ok, I went to the pound today. I did see another brindle bitch, she needs some help, you'll see what I mean from the pictures.....She is older looking and is a lovely girl. She is calm and friendly, loves a fuss. They tried her with another dog and she wasn't too bad. Bless her, the young bitch wanted to play with her and she just didn't want to know so was a bit grumbly with her but I think she would be ok with a calm dog and good introductions.

She has hair loss round her rump and tail, the skin is dry and toughened. She is such a nice girl.......

Please can you help her??

Many thanks,
Gilka xx

Saffy is now with us! She is very much a 'ringer of Pickles (homed earlier this year)and Phoebe'. A small slender framed staffie with a pretty pretty face and sweet demeanour. Our vet registered her as '5yr' old its hard to say as she is physically challenged but I would say 5-7 yrs based on the browning of the whites of her eyes and hint of white hairs on her muzzle.

In the vets: Yes to meet her currently tugs at the heart strings.. She is skeletal, her skin is hard grey and powdery bare crusted lower back and backside..the rest of her body and legs are less severe with very thin fur and 'spots'. Her head is least affected. Scrape carried out and surprizingly no evidence of mites. She has raging kennel cough and teeth need a scrape. She has had puppies in the past. She is swollen, but not in season. Treatment plan Maleseb baths every 2-3 days. Have 'Advocate' to hit any hint of mange or fleas. 2 weeks course of antibiotics. Vitamins supplement. Skin care lotion. Gentle diet .. naturediet. Melted Christabel's (our vet's) heart when she went to give her a treat and she sat and took it very gently!

At home: Saffy is being kept separated as she needs to recover. She enjoyed our garden with the lights on and ate her meal gently without 'gusto'. We joined her having our meal on the veranda. Came over for affection, a little wary and nervous, but definitely has human trust. Seemed especially taken with Lorenzo :) Had a Malaseb bath and then shown her room which she seemed delighted with having lovely views over the neighbourhood. Settled over night just coughing and throat clearing to be heard.

Saffy has a wonderful nature and will win through this unscathered we're sure. Her Staffie love for people and affection will win many hearts as she is gentle with it. She has the prettiest head ever!

The pictures below are taken just as a record of her poor condition. Already after her bath her furs beauty is showing. Like Phoebe she has what I called a 'Black Mahogany' Brindle rich in colour.

Oh Saffy ...things noted today..
1) Teeth are in a good condition; maybe younger? 5yrs
2) Settles in the car, not too interactive..just keeps an eye
3) Sad feel about her, looks at you with sad forboding eyes
4) Greets strangers really well sides up to them and will quite soon after arrival offers the belly
5) Knows to bite through a lead to try and get to where she wants to be..front of car into back seat when left!
6) Takes tablets really well!
7) Long exploritory, intuitive, reflection on her skin. Hard 'spots' under a dry 'elephant' type grey skin...feeling this is due to starvation/ poor nutrition. I am sure with a high quality diet her immunity will kick in.
Cool Kind gentle nature No problems with children. Warm, grateful and concerned little personality.

Sad sad story behind this little love

Shocking to see the state that some Staffie's come into us..but TLC and in less than a week you can see such improvement in her condition.

Saffy knows to sit, paw...other paw...and looks ernestly and keenly into your eyes. She doesn't seem to have been ill treated by her demeanour. Yet I could see her sleeping in rough conditions with a litter of pups without the enriched diet to feed her pups...and them sucking her dry. Must have had pups last season. Will spay her this week.

Yes marked change in Saffy ..she has stubble all over her bare skin, where she has fur it is glistening. I did notice she seemed quite swollen and wasn't sure whether it was because of her poor skin coverage that she looked more prominent. Low and behold she came into season today! Bless her/ Sometimes good healthy food and life style and the body responds! Socialisation will be on hold for a wee while!

Today...Saffy had a date. Fiona appeared and with such excitement secured her in the car..not easy, one chewed lead later..and off she went.

Fiona is in love but realistic that Saffy might not fit in with all aspects of her lifestyle but basic ones she will. So Fiona is offering our little friend a helping hand through her season and safely out the other side so as the butterfly emerges in fully glory she can fly.....if she must!

So, we left Lynne's house with Saffy's face pressed up against the car window watching Lynne fade into the distance. The journey home was fairly uneventful. Saffy happily watched the world go by and then settled down for a nap.
She did get a little stressed when we got to my place and we had a couple of accidents despite being taken into the garden on arrival to powder her nose. Still, the clever girl managed to keep it to the laminate and came to tell me. A big cuddle and a drink of water and she was all calm and happy again. Oh, she likes being sung to too!
She's now snuggled up next to me on the sofa snoring away! I'm really looking forward to getting to know my little lodger.

Thought it was time for a photo update of Saffy. She's really blossomed in Lynne's care. She has a good coating of stubble on her baldie bits and, as you can see from her glossiness, the rest of her coat feels very silky and lovely (especially on her head - good job she likes kisses!)

Image

So things I've learned about Saffy so far...
- she likes her bed! At 10.30pm she jumped into her bed, promptly started snoring and didn't stir til i woke her at 8am.
- she knows some commands. She sits on command and waits patiently for her lead to be put on and off. We even managed a 'stay' today - think it was the promise of a belly rub!
- if she thinks you have a treat for her she will immediately sit down and offer you her paw. If you're not quick with the treat she offers you the other paw just in case.
- although interested in your food when you are eating she will stay on her blanket and doesn't beg or pester
- bath time is a total body experience. For EVERYONE!
