Bentley's Story: Teddy Bear Bentley has been with our rescue since August 2015. He has proved himself to be a fantastic Terrier over this time, and is more than ready for his loving forever home. Patterdale lovers will appreciate him! Bentley is very affectionate with adults and loves a fuss. He has proved easy to harness and handle; Bentley is busy indoors and out, and is always ready for a walk and a cuddle. He is muzzle trained, and although he doesn't need to wear it all the time while out and about, he accepts it without problems when necessary. Bentley walks nicely with calm, on-lead doggy friends. While supervision is necessary when meeting other dogs, especially off-lead dogs, Bentley has met other dogs well many times since he has been in our care. Bentley needs a Terrier experienced, supportive family. Due to his known background, Bentley needs to be retained on an extender or other lead outside the home. He also needs tight front door and back gate security. Bentley could live with another dog, but is not for cats or small furries.

Before he came to us, Bentley and his original owner moved in with her son, Bentley's Pattie father, and a lurcher. Bentley mixed well with the dogs in his home, but took an extreme dislike to another local dog, bit through his own lead, and twice scrapped with the other dog. Bentley came off worse and was badly injured (He soon recovered fully). Neighbours on the estate then took against Bentley and were threatening the family, so they hid Bentley in a shed on an allotment while they tried to find him an alternative life via Facebook. We stepped forwards to offer a Rescue place. Bentley is neutered, chipped and fully vaccinated. He is kennelled near Guildford.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, please complete our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. It is always the first step in our rehoming process. Upon application, you must be ready to take in your new dog within seven days. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum adoption donation is £175. This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance, and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Bentley's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal a different picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original Referral information:
Patterdale Terrier Rescue was approached to help Bentley 5th August 2015:
To whom it may concern, I have been advised to contact yourselves with regards to a dog I have been asked to try and place before he is euthanised. Today I have made contact with around 60 of my rescue contacts. Unfortunately all are full. Here is Bentley's write up:
"MAX URGENT! I have been asked to try and place a dog under a rescue ASAP. Bentley is a black Patterdale, entire male, 4 years old. Living with heavy drinker and drug takers. Long story surrounding current circumstances. A few days back, Bentley snapped his lead and attacked a Staffy (twice he has done this now) He can be OK with some dogs (lived happily with his elderly father) but has always had a disliking of this particular dog. Police have been involved and will seize and PTS if it happens again however they are happy for me to try and place him under a rescue. A large group of local folk (from the estate Bentley was living on) are threatening to shoot him and are hounding the vulnerable owner daily. At present, Bentley has been moved onto an allotment for hiding. He is not happy here and screams constantly which has led to local residents complaining. He appears friendly enough with adults. Please do contact me if you can assist or would like more info."

Met the very wonderful Bentley yesterday and we travelled to the vets for neuter. The vets shaved and cleaned his extensive injuries whilst he was under and is now on painkillers and antibiotics which delays us starting vaccinations.

Bentley met every dog in the vets really well, friendly. Back on site in Potters Bar he met the 'little dogs' well whilst walking through the site. Here are some picture of Bentley still a bit groggie from Gen An.

What a treat getting to walk Bentley on Saturday. He was very friendly meeting me in his kennel and very pleased to be going for a walk. No problem getting him out of the block then we were off. Bentley is a stunning looking pattie. He was enjoying investigating the hedgerows but would soon get walking again if called. I was enjoying watching him sniff about and relish his time outside.

We then sat in the shade and he was very friendly enjoying lovely cuddles. This boy is awesome and would make a wonderful companion for some lucky person. So scrummy!

Got the chance to meet and walk Bentley today. Had a great welcome from him :)

We went to the paddock first where he just ran and ran which was lovely to watch, bless his heart.

Bentley was eager to go on his walk. He started to pull but is very responsive and walked really nicely. We met a cat which didn't go down to well so no home with cats. I put him on a long lead and he enjoyed having a good sniff in the hedgerows. A typical little terrier, not liking rabbits or a mouse that we saw.

On the way back Bentley noticed our resident ornamental pigs in the bushes. He went to have a pop at one which wobbled and almost fell over. Bentley just didn't know what to make of it and looked a bit startled. I had to laugh :D

Walk over, sausages eaten and I think that Bentley was a happy chappie. Great character :smiley-gen132.gif: xx

Firstly, ouch. Those injuries have cleared up really well though, he's a handsome chappie.
Like others have noted, he was pretty keen to get out of the kennels today, and not too keen to get back in (can't say I blame him really, the weather was lovely). That said he wasn't any trouble, and he walked nicely after we got a bit of distance from the block.
We had time for a thorough investigation of the hedgerows, but it's easy to get him to move on.
He does like a bit of a fuss too. Nice terrier character.

Bentley here is one of my regular walks, so I want to put in a few words for the little guy :)

Took him out for a long walk yesterday. We made a beeline for the big field, guess he was pretty keen to stretch his legs, and he was very focused on the walk. No trouble passing the rabbits, birds, or horses.

He does sometimes bark at other dogs, mostly near the kennels so it could just be excitement (or stress), but he is getting better. In any case he seems happy with people, and he was keen to demonstrate his mastery of 'sit' as soon as the treats came out .

I think he would make someone a wonderful companion.

Helen usually walks Bentley on Tuesdays but was unable to make it today so I had the pleasure of his company.

I had a lovely welcome from Bentley. Easily harnessed and ready for the off. Straight into the paddock where he had a quick mooch around but soon asked to leave! Ok Bentley, walk time it is then.

Such a good boy walking really nicely. No problem with passing cars, totally ignored a horse but a squirrel who crossed his path got some attention!

Back in his kennel Bentley was very happy to be left with some treats. I agree with Fizz, Bentley would make a great companion.
