Mika's Story: Mika was loved by his original family. He got out of the garden when rubbish was being put out and rushed over to a postman. The postman tried to push and kick him away, and Mika bit his shoe. Mika's family were ordered to give him up by their housing association. We agreed to take him in as soon as kennel space was available.

We believe Mika to be a Bedlington Terrier crossed with a Fell Terrier. His glossy, wavy, luxuriant coat is amazing. Mika is excellent with other dogs of all sizes in the home, but is not for cats or other small animals, including frogs, birds, etc. Mika deserves an experienced terrier or lurcher family behind him so he can achieve full socialisation outside. Wearing his whippet muzzle protects him from his own excitement. Strict exit management essential avoiding front door or back gate opportunist escape. Mika is neutered, chipped and fully vaccinated. Mika is currently in boarding kennels near Gatwick.

Mika has such puppy energy coming from his terrier genetics, and this gives him a feel of eternal youth. Mika wants to engage, and gets excited meeting people and dogs. He needs minimal management and has successfully danced for many a kennel maid and volunteer entering his kennel to offer him a walk. His only attempt to snap has been within the vets when approached with a needle. We use a loose muzzle at the vets and also on his walks, as if in public he can get overexcited when seeing a dog or cat, and may divert to his walker's leg to express his excitement. Mika is safe within the home once he has danced for visitors! Mika loves people and just needs a little understanding.

If you are interested in rehoming one of our dogs, please complete our ONLINE HOMING QUESTIONNAIRE. It is always the first step in our rehoming process. Upon application, you must be ready to take in your new dog within seven days. For more detailed information, please see our Homing Process.

Please support our work and help our long stay dogs: Our minimum Adoption Donation is £250 (£400 for pup under 1 yr old). This supports our continuing rescue work and is non-refundable. We exist solely due to the goodwill and donations of our supporters and volunteers. Our dogs need supportive families who will offer them patience, time and tolerance whilst they settle in their new homes. Our Rescue offers all our dogs back-up for life.

Please note: Dog laws have changed, with zero public tolerance, and prejudice against bull breeds and terriers. Our Rescue asks new owners to keep their dog on a lead in public spaces and manage and support its encounters with new dogs and people, so as not to place the dog's life at risk. Destruction and Control Orders are commonplace nowadays.

Mika's progress through our Rescue is below.
We work with our dogs, who often reveal a different picture and positive skills as they build trust.
Original Referral information:
Mika's owner called to see if we would take Mika in as he had accidentally bitten when a postman used his arms to stop Mika jumping up. All other Rescues had taken this at face value. We agreed to make Mika safe.

Where do I start with Mika? Well at the beginning I suppose! Tim and I met Mika in his kennel and he was very nervous but he SO wanted to be brave and make friends. Luckily Tim was on hand with his terrier-jedi-skills and soon got Mika to trust him enough to take treats and soon enough we were heading out. Mika has the most amazing walk, like a dressage horse, regal and proud. :D He is an interesting boy looks wise, smooth fur, curly fur and very soft - what's not to like! Such a sweet little face that can look so sad but once he relaxed with us in the paddock boy does he have a smile that can light up a dull, dreary November day.

Mika's long legs really come in useful when he runs and boy can he run, so fast and he just loves to run! It was wonderful to see him leave his worries behind once he started running to fetch the ball. The whole time he became more brave and was soon running up to Tim and me for strokes and treats.

He did get a little upset when he saw Cathy barking at him in the car park on our way back but this is nerves and I am sure this will settle with time as he learns to build his confidence when near other dogs.

So yes this boy has well and truly won me over. He is unique and adorable and deserves to be loved and adored. Such a sweet soul that needs to build his confidence around kind loving people. He will no doubt win many more hearts during his time with us. :smiley-gen132.gif:

I got to walk Mika again on Saturday. He was much more confident this time when I got in his kennel. He was wiggling and dashing around, so excited to be going for a walk. We headed to the paddock where again Mika showed me just how smartly he trots along. When I finally found a ball Mika was off running free and loving every minute. It really is a joy to see this boy run. He has a big smile on that adorable little face and it makes my heart swell with happiness. Hoonercat was walking past with Tia and Saffron and Mika was very interested. He really enjoyed being able to say hello with the safety of the fence to help him feel confident. I had to video it!

I was really amazed with how much more relaxed with me he was after just one previous walk. Compared to the nervous, scared little chap I met last week. I am sure he will come out of his shell more and build on his confidence, making him a much more relaxed dog when out and about. He really wins your heart after meeting him. I am smitten for sure!

Got a walk in with Mika before he headed off to Gatwick kennels. He was so excited in the kennel when I turned up with the leads. He sort of skips around and runs up then runs away dancing for joy! He was in sniffing mode in the paddock this morning just mooching around enjoying all the smells. We then headed out for a walk and he was so happy to be out. Such a lovely little chap who once he knows you builds in confidence each time you see him. He will make a fun and entertaining companion for some lucky person.

I love the way he bounces around the paddock!

Collected the lovely Mika this morning and took him over to Gatwick, I'd only met him once a couple of weeks ago but he still remembered me, tail wagging ten to the dozen, not the nervous little chap I first met, travelled well in the car just looking out the window watching the world go by.

Once at Gatwick took him for a nice long walk where he did lots of investigating in the woodland, showed him his new kennel, slipped on his winter coat and had a big cuddle with him.

we're slowly but surely seeing Mika's lovely friendly personality come out :)

Mika had his second vaccination on Monday 19th Jan. Mika isnt happy in the vets once injections seemed on the cards, so needs a muzzle and locked into a firm hold and soon settles after the ordeal. Mika gives all the impression of a 10 month puppy can't believe his date of birth just turned 4 years old...knock me down with a feather. Eternal youth for you Mika!

Met Mika today and he is a real star. It took me a while to get the harness on as he was bouncing around so much I couldn't get his head through! (I think this was due to my lack of skill  ) but as soon as we were out he calmed down. He was very good on the lead and obviously pleased to be out and about. Walked well with Hannah. Back at the kennel lunch was waiting for him so didn't spend too long saying goodbye as he had other things on his mind  but I did get the impression he quite likes cuddles if food isn't around :smiley-gen132.gif:
