Terrier Rescue's Approach to Terriers - Our Terriers Need You!

Post by xxlynne » Thu Jun 05, 2014 3:14 pm

Our motto is: 'Yes, because it's a terrier!'

Terriers are like a toddlers' 'terrible twos'! They are head-strong, very independent in their thinking, and many have the tendency to be aloof by nature. Don't think of them as adolescents or adults. They live in the moment.

Terrier genetics are a cross between the Sighthound and the Bull Breed, so understand that you will see the Sighthound focus: the hunt and chase, aloofness and sleek looks. The Bull Breed brings to the Terrier: people affection, musculature, audacity, and the love of family.

So what about rules and pack order?
Let us tell you. Our Terrier Rescue dogs are part of our pack families - most sleep in the bedroom with us, if not on the bed. As pack leaders, we take responsibility to ensure their safety and care. We are not interested in power games, dominance theory, or control. Having heard so many people share their intellectual understanding about 'off furniture', 'through the door first' and 'demotion tactics', we just don't agree with the 'detached interpretation' approach. We are NOT superior to our dogs; they are not 'lowly' dogs - they are the loves of our lives - but they are not babies either.

With terriers, grumbles, growls, nips, indirect bites, and 'general misdemeanours' happen, and we take responsibility for these. We manage their lives, so these behaviours don't happen, and blame ourselves when they do. We are very forgiving. Our instincts and attention aren't focused on the behaviour itself, but the reasons behind the behaviour. If a Terrier feels the need to guard its bed, then give it space and respect that. If a Terrier gets excited when people visit, give them the joy of that moment - little Terriers should be seen and heard! Bites can happen, but they heal quickly, and as a consequence, you become a better manager.

Some of our terriers are former working dogs. We do not rehome our terriers into working environments. We ensure as best we can that they will be permanently retired and looked after in the heart of loving homes.

Terriers are here with us on this earth to entertain. They are antidepressants! If they depress you, then perhaps you shouldn't have a Terrier. They need understanding and adoration. They are like little people who have very full-on personalities. Remember: You can't train the Terrier out of a Terrier. They are their own people!
