Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 France
Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
I hadn't walked Arthur for a few weeks so I wondered if he would remember me (he won't have just anybody taking him out of his kennel!). Well, I needn't have worried because he greeted me enthusiastically, let me harness him and carry him out of the kennel block. As Rachel found, our Arthur doesn't forget. Had I known he was now a VIP (Dog Today award), I would have treated him more defferentially but he didn't seem to mind. Good as gold walking alongside Roscoe and little fuss when a van passed by. Not so keen when meeting a strange dog so I guess he does need to socialise a bit more. He really is a sweetie though.
Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Well Arthur was an absolute star today, we had intended to take two of our dogs along but a change of plans meant that our dog Poppy had the pleasure.
Below is a short video of them first meeting....Arthur so wanted to play however Poppy is quite aloof and we knew she;d tell him off and we really wanted to gauge Arthur's reaction.
He didn't disappoint, in fact he was the perfect gentleman, showing Poppy lots of respect. No snapping or any sign of aggression from Arthur. Both Rachel and I were very impressed with him. They even played ball together :).
When dealing with Arthur it's a marathon, not a sprint. next week he's meeting more of our terrier clan.
I took arthur back to his kennel, sat there cuddling him and left him with a rawhide chew (chicken flavour, his favourite ;) )

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Today Arthur met our Ralphie, (it was around a year ago they were at the same kennel but don't know if they were ever walked together)
Anyway.....Arthur had already met our two ladies but we weren't sure of how he's react to another male dog...yet again Arthur did well. They were walked side by side for around 15 mins and we both felt confident in both dogs to let them get closer. Ralphie to be honest wasn't that interested in Arthur and seemed more interested in the wildlife whilst Arthur was definitely more interested in Ralphie (particularly his rear end as you'll see in the video :) ).
There was no silly squabbles from either dog even when treats were on offer and after half an hour they were walking and sniffing the bushes side by side.
We were so proud of both dogs today, particularly Arthur as he hasn't had a great deal of exposure to dogs in close proximity.
Next weekend he meets the final one of our four terriers (Billy) and I've no reason why they shouldn't get on judging how Arthur has been so far

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Part four of Arthur meeting my little lot :)
We left Arthur meeting Billy last as he is the alpha male of my little group of terriers and it's really down to him if he accepts Arthur. I'm pleased to say it was a success
When they first met there was no yapping, no staring each other out or aggressiveness from either dog although both were a bit reserved with each other almost a mutual respect.
when Arthur had met our previous 3 dogs he was quite interested to get close and socialize (sniffing of their rear end) quite early on in the meeting however we got the impression Arthur knew Billy wouldn't appreciate that (he was right) and kept his distance.
They were both happy to parallel walk next to each other and after about an hour both Rachel and I were confident with both dogs to get closer and socialize more, in fact they were both standing on Rachel's knee taking treats.
This weekend Arthur is spending the day and were all going out for a long walk then back to our for afternoon tea. It will be interesting to see Arthur copes being with all four at the same time but so far Arthur has been a star.

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Arthur had his biggest challenge over the weekend a 'play date' with our four terriers and he passed with flying colours. As you know from Tim's earlier post he had already met them individually and he was an absolute star.
Firstly on Saturday they all went for a nice walk, for well over an hour and then back to our house. In they all trotted and Arthur had a good nose about, he got the measure of our dominate male, Billy early on. But Billy was very good if Arthur good too close Billy did a great Elvis impression which Arthur understood the message to back off. Rosie our smallest tried to instigate play and this seemed to confuse Arthur but soon he was chasing her round the garden. All was good and we had to get Arthur back to kennels for his tea.
Today we pick Arthur up with our 4 in the back of the car and of we went to Godstone for them to have a run around in the paddock - not much running but plenty of sniffing. All five of the lead just pottering around it was wonderful to see Arthur and his new friends. Then back home again, in through the front door and our 4 waited for their usual treat, not sure if Arthur was over excited or a bit bemused but he didn't want his treat. He lost the first one to Ralphie and then despite hanging on to the next one (he was wandering around like an old man with a cigarette out the corner of his mouth) up popped Rosie and took the treat straight out of his mouth - no aggression from Arthur what a star.
Ralphie was very good and Arthur and him did plenty of sniffing, it got a bit much for Ralphie with Arthur's nose permanently attached to his bottom. Ralphie did a little grumble and Arthur again got the message and no more bottom sniffing. Towards the end Billy also tried to instigate play but Arthur was a little confused and not sure how to react but still no aggression. Our older female, Poppy has a vast array of strange noises which I also think Arthur found confusing!!
All in all two very good days, we've learnt more about Arthur in these hours than we have over the past couple of years. He's definitely not a fighter quite the opposite really, just a little confused terrier who desperately needs a home of his own, anybody would be lucky to have him and reap so many rewards.
Short video ofArthur playing in the back garden and also at Godstone
Another short video of Arthur in the kitchen with our four waiting for treats;
Judging by a couple of the dogs licking their lips I must have treats in my hand :) he soon found a ball to play with

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
He seems to have come a long way since I started walking at Gatwick back in May. I've never actually walked him myself - I know he wasn't so great with people he didn't know very well, something he seems to have improved on as well as in other areas. I remember trying to say hello to him early on and he kindly "told" me in his own way that that wasn't going to happen  I have to admit, the last few weeks I've been cheekily popping him a little treat or two after my walks on a Friday which he seems to have no problem with. It's nice to see the friendly Arthur that I've seen with those he knows a little better, lovely little chap :)
Loved seeing the progress of Arthur with your gang over the last weeks, looks like his doggy manners are up to scratch

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Arthur came to us for Christmas (he's still be here now but for work commitments) but.....he's coming back for the new year
All I can say is WOW Arthur really made our Christmas. We had a child gate set up between the living room and the dining room but only use it the once on Christmas Eve (first evening) while we ate dinner. The rest of the time Arthur mixed with our four, even at dinner time - he was so patient and waited his time to be fed. (see video)
Our terriers sleep with us upstairs, Rachel didn't want to leave Arthur downstairs on his own, so she decided to sleep in the spare room with Arthur. He jumped up on the bed and tuck himself in behind her knees and didn't stir. She said the thump of his tail woke her up and there he was sitting waiting for a cuddle. On Boxing Day at 4am Rachel and Arthur sneaked into the master bedroom and again he snuggled down between myself and Rachel and not a noise from the other four!
We've seen a wonderful change in Arthur from being unsure how to play (not sure I blame him 4 terriers can be a bit boisterous) to instigating play with our youngest Ralphie (see video). Out walking he was less reactive to the cars, bikes and people going past, not sure if our dogs not reacting gave him confidence.
On his first evening with us he enjoyed going in and out of the garden, all of a sudden we heard a deep bark, our 4 all went out to investigate it must be a cat, a squirrel or a bird, surely an intruder but after much sniffing and rushing about a look of confusion from our 4!!! Arthur was barking at his own reflection :)
We can't wait to collect him on new years eve!
Believe it or not but our other terrier Billy is there - under the sleeping bag The 3 boys.... His best mate..Ralphie With Rachel.. rare moment...lap without a dog very polite is Arthur - giving paw when I got out the treats Playing with one of his christmas pressies Lovely Arthur Using Laura as a launch pad to play with Ralphie Cuddle time...

Re: Arthur JRT x DOB 2012 Gatwick Kenns
Arthur has been an absolute star he last few days – I picked Arthur up on new year’s eve, sat him in the front of the car, (My four were in the back)
all strapped in we popped over to use the paddock at Godstone. Arthur greeted my little lot with a waggy tail and they spent the next 30 minutes sniffing and generally running around
(the idea was to hopefully tire them out).
This was the second time in just under a week Arthur has stayed with us and we could definitely see a more confident Arthur when it came to playing with the others, he was actually trying to instigate some of the games
(the rough and tumble is just only with Ralphie though), he still isn’t too sure about the others although he will happily play with them but very light play.
Although Arthur is quite happy to play on his own too, our four can sleep for England. Arthur found a tennis ball and would drop it at my feet for me to kick, he’s then bring the ball back and roll it to me and we’d start all over again.
Ours obviously felt at ease with Arthur as they would fall asleep next to him , Billy on his back all four paws in the air snoring for England, Ralphie using Arthur as a head rest.
I was even confident enough to leave them on their own all in the same room together (albeit for only 5 mins)
Arthur loves human company, I don’t know if in the kennels he doesn’t get as much interaction but if he gets the chance he’ll always sit on mine or Rachel’s lap even if there are cushions/ chairs available
(where as our four will just lie anywhere).
Arthur doesn’t appear to be food aggressive, he was fed along with the others and although fed last he didn’t attempt to steal any of the others food, in fact he was very slow to eat and one of mine did attempt to steal his food but no reaction at all from Arthur.
Fully house trained no accidents at all – The final two nights Arthur slept in the spare room (due to the fireworks going off and ours can get a bit funny) – Didn’t hear a peep out of him all night, although I had to let them all out at 4 am, Arthur obviously came with us and after doing his business he went straight back to his bed without asking.
Arthur has got so much love to give and his trust in people is getting better but there’s no point in trying to rush Arthur he just needs time to trust.
The first time round when Arthur was here our daughter Laura completely ignored him, she’d speak to him but didn’t attempt to stroke him or encourage him to sit on her lap. The second visit with Arthur, he would happily jump up and sit on Laura’s lap so he obviously felt more comfortable with Laura second time round.
In all it was an absolute pleasure to have Arthur to stay and see his confidence bloom and to be part of our terrier family – we didn’t want to take Arthur back yesterday but with our work commitments it was virtually impossible for Arthur to stay any longer (we need more bank holidays) :).
Arthur will definitely be spending days out with our four at weekends - roll on the Easter bank holidays (although hopefully he’ll have his forever home by then, he so deserves it).

Met up with Arthur again on Saturday, Didn't know who was the most excited him or me :) - the last two occassions I've been to the kennels he's come home with me and true to form he made a beeline for my car - I had to explain to Arthur not this weekend as Rachel has flu so off (trying to avoid the rain) we headed off into the woods Big mistake..it was full of mud, Arthur didn't mind though as I ended up carrying him,
it was just to muddy for his little legs. Back on dry land we spotted a squirrel and although he wasn't vocal he seemed intrigued (as 99% of terriers would be) and we followed the squirrel from tree to tree :). We both soon got bored of this and carried on with the walk.
The heavens opened just as we got back to the kennels - perfect timing ;)
After getting a towel I sat in Arthur's kennel for a further 15 mins drying him off and removing bits of mud - Arthur as always was as good as gold, letting me dry him off and I in return received lots and lots of face kisses. I promised Arthur that he's be staying the weekend with us very very soon and left him chewing a rawhide treat.
